Saint Martial : le premier pont de Limoges
Souvent confondu avec son presque jumeau le pont Saint Etienne (comme le nom de la cathédrale qui le surplombe), le pont Saint Martial est un pont médiéval dit "à becs" du XIIIe siècle. Il est construit en de granit sur les fondations du vieux pont romain antique du 1er siècle qui faisait communiquer Augustoritum avec la rive gauche.
Les romains construisirent ce pont en amont de l'ancien gué gaulois afin d'assurer une desserte convenable à la nouvelle cité. Capitale du pays des Lémovices, cette ville de prestige nouvellement constituée fut appelée Augustoritum, nom qui alliait de façon symbolique celui d'Auguste, son fondateur, à l'ancienne désignation du gué.
Le pont était situé dans la continuité du « cardo maximus », axe de la ville romaine, un peu en amont du. Mesurant près de 23,5m de large cette artère suivait à quelque chose près le tracé actuel des rues Pont Saint-Martial, de l'Hôpital, du Canal et une partie de la rue de la Boucherie. Sur la rive droite vous trouverez un calvaire datant du XIIIème qui était jadis au milieu du pont.
Régulièrement entretenu, souvent consolidé, car il était l'unique passage vers le midi, cet ouvrage d'art repose sur les bases d'origine qui sont encore visibles. Il est donc le doyen des ponts limougeauds. La tour de bois défensive placée en son milieu fut emportée par un violent orage en 1213. Très tôt on l'appela pont Saint Martial, du nom de l'évêque qui au IIIème siècle, vint évangéliser les populations. Mégadox lui a consacré une cache « Bords de Vienne – le doyen GC3503F ».
Molière à Limoges ?
Le pont Saint-Martial a été pendant plus de 1200 ans le seul pont sur la Vienne. Il a donné naissance à un quartier populaire à la forte identité, aujourd'hui réhabilité, et peuplé de "Ponticauds" à l'accent très particulier. Ils auraient eu, en 1649, la visite d’un hôte de marque en la personne de Molière, à l’occasion de sa tournée. La maison à colombages où il aurait passé une nuit, bien restaurée, nous plonge au cœur de cette époque.

Pourquoi "VERT" ?
Ma première cache posée (GC3VHY2) était une boîte verte, avec un stylo vert, un log book vert et des objets d'échange verts. Ainsi est née l'idée de placer les caches qui ont suivi sous le signe du "VERT" et de proposer un défi consistant à y déposer de préférence des objets "VERTs". Ce défi ne peut malheureusement pas concerner les caches de taille nano ou micro.

Saint Martial : first bridge of Limoges
Often mistaken with its twin bridge Saint Etienne (like the name of the cathedral which overhangs it), the bridge Saint Martial is a medieval bridge of the XIIIth century. It is built in granite on the foundations of an antique Roman bridge of the 1st century which made Augustoritum communicate with the left bank.
The Roman built this bridge upstream to the former Gallic ford to insure a sideboard suitable to the new city. new main town of the country of Lémovices, this prestigious city was called Augustoritum, name which allied as a symbol Auguste, its founder, in the former name of the ford.
It was situated in the continuity of " cardo maximus ", street of the Roman city, little upstream to the Gallic ford. Wide of about 23,5m this main street followed more or less the current plan of streets Pont Saint-Martial, de l’Hôpital, du Canal and a part of the street de la Boucherie. On the right bank you will find an Calvary dating the XIIIth century which was formerly in the middle of the bridge.
Regularly maintained, often strengthened, because it was the only passage to the south, this work of engineering always rests on its original bases which are still visible. He is thus the most senior bridge in Limoges. The wooden defensive tower placed in its middle was taken by a violent thunderstorm in 1213. Very early we called it bridge Saint Martial, from the name of the bishop which came in the IIIth century to evangelize the populations. Mégadox dedicated to it an hiding place "Bords de Vienne – le doyen GC3503F".
Molière in Limoges ?
The bridge Saint Martial was during more than 1200 years the only bridge on Vienne. Here has risen a popular district with a strong identity, today rehabilitated, inhabited by the "Ponticauds". They would have had, in 1649, the visit of a distinguished guest, in the person of Molière, on the occasion of its tour. The half-timbered house where he would have spent a night, well restored, throw us in the heart of this period.

Why "VERT" ?
My first geocache ( GC3VHY2) was a green box, with a green pen, a green log book and green items for exchange. So was born the idea to place the caches which followed under the sign of the "VERT" ("GREEN" in French) and to propose a game consisting in depositing there rather "VERT" objects. This game cannot unfortunately concern the caches in nano or micro size.
