La place Cambronne et la rue Cambronne commémorent Pierre Cambronne (1770-1842), général à la bataille de Waterloo.


Le mot de Cambronne

Ce fut lors de la Bataille de Waterloo que Cambronne laissa sa marque dans l'histoire. Le général Colville de l'armée britannique demanda à Cambronne de se rendre. La première réponse fût « La garde meurt mais ne se rend pas !». Colville insista. Vînt alors la célèbre réponse de Cambronne, "Merde".

The word of Cambronne

It was during the Battle of Waterloo that Cambronne made his mark on history. General Colville of the British army yelled a request for Cambronne to surrender. His first answer was "The Guard dies but does not surrender!". Colville requested him again. In response Cambronne famously replied ‘Merde!’ (‘shit!’).
