FSC-2014 Bombay Hook

Cache Details:
Drive east on Whitehall Neck Road off of RT 9 (2.5 miles) to the gate for the wildlife Refuge.

Note: Gate is closed from 1/2 hour after SUNSET to 1/2 hour before SUNRISE. Cache is NOT available when gate is closed.

Pass through the gate and go 0.3 miles to the Visitor center and parking. Take a short walk to the cache. After you find the cache please stop in the Visitor Center to see the exhibits, use the rest rooms if needed, and thank the National Wildlife Area for hosting the cache. There is no fee to access this cache, but there would be a $4/car fee for a full visit to the wildlife area

NOTE: Written approval was obtained for this cache from Tina Watson (Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge) just for the FSC. Any cache in a NWR requires written approval.



Description:
Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1937, protects on of the largest remaining expanses of tidal salt marsh in the Mid-Atlantic region. It is just one of many links in the chain of refuges extending from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Bombay Hook Refuge, a Nationally recognized birding spot attracting birders from across the country, is designated a Globally Important Bird Area.

Please take the time to stop into the Visitors Center and browse the very informative area. Tours, videos, informative displays are present during their business hours. The wildlife drive is open from sunrise to sunset daily. The visitor center is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. year round. During spring and fall weekends, the visitor center is open Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

September:
Late migrating shorebirds and songbirds are present. Duck numbers increase. First Canada geese arrive. Tickseed sunflower, goldenrod and Joe-Pye-weed in flower.

October:
Best month for Avocets. Large numbers of Canada and Snow geese arrive. Duck numbers increase as pintail, mallard and black ducks begin their fall migration. Bur marigolds bloom in freshwater pools.

November:
Peak of fall waterfowl migration. Common species include Canada geese, snow geese, (blue and white phases), gadwall, mallard, black duck, pintail, American widgeon, wood duck, northern shoveler, blue-winged and green-winged teal, scaup, bufflehead, ruddy duck, red-breasted and hooded merganser.
