The New Brunswick Great War Geocaching Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. It is our hope that you will learn from this GeoTrail and spend a moment to reflect on the sacrifices at home and abroad. Lest we forget

Historique
Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Nous espérons que vous trouverez cette activité enrichissante et que vous prendrez un instant pour songer aux sacrifices qu’ont accomplis ces gens, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger.

The 26th New Brunswick Battalion, CEF was raised as part of the 2nd Canadian Division beginning in November 1914. It sailed from Saint John for Britain in June 1915 and after a period of training joined the Canadian Corps in France in September. The battalion fought in most of the Corps’ major battles, including the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Hill 70, Passchendaele, Amiens, and the attack on the Hindenburg Line. It helped to capture the villages of Courcelette in September 1916 and Passchendaele in November 1917. It was also part of the British Army’s occupation force in Germany in early 1919. The 26th returned to New Brunswick in May 1919 after having been overseas for almost four years. Almost 6,000 soldiers served in the battalion, most of whom were New Brunswickers; others came from Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, Great Britain and its other colonies, including Newfoundland, the United States, and more distant places like Denmark and South Africa. Nine hundred of its members died, and another 2,900 became non-fatal casualties.

Il a participé à la capture du village de Courcelette en septembre 1916 et du village de Passchendaele en novembre 1917. Il faisait aussi partie de la force d’occupation de l’Armée britannique au début de 1919. Le 26e Bataillon est rentré au Nouveau-Brunswick en mai 1919 après avoir passé près de quatre ans outre-mer. Près de 6 000 soldats ont servi dans le bataillon. La plupart étaient Néo-Brunswickois, mais d’autres étaient originaires de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard et de la Nouvelle-Écosse, de la Grande-Bretagne et de ses colonies, dont Terre-Neuve, les États-Unis et des endroits plus éloignés comme le Danemark et l’Afrique du Sud. Neuf cents membres du bataillon sont morts et 2 900 ont été blessés.
