The New Brunswick Great War Geocaching Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. It is our hope that you will learn from this GeoTrail and spend a moment to reflect on the sacrifices at home and abroad. Lest we forget

Historique
Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Nous espérons que vous trouverez cette activité enrichissante et que vous prendrez un instant pour songer aux sacrifices qu’ont accomplis ces gens, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger.

Percy A. Guthrie was born in Oromocto, NB in 1884. In 1902, he served in the South African War and later joined the militia, becoming a captain in the 71st York Regiment. He also became a lawyer in Fredericton and entered politics, being elected as a member of the legislative assembly in 1914. At the outbreak of war in August 1914 he volunteered for overseas service and was sent to the 12th Battalion as a major. In 1915, he joined the 10th Battalion in France and became its commanding officer for a short time until he was wounded at the Battle of Festubert in May and was invalided back home. During his return to Canada he survived the sinking of his ship by a German U-Boat. After recovering from his wounds he became a provincial recruiting officer. In 1916, he was authorized to raise and command the 236th Overseas Battalion (New Brunswick Kilties- Sir Sam’s Own). However, after arriving in Britain the unit was broken up for reinforcements. After the war Guthrie moved to Boston where he resumed his law career. During the Second World War he re-joined the army and served in Ottawa. He died in 1948 and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery Fredericton.

Il devient également avocat à Fredericton, puis entre en politique : en 1914, il est élu à l’Assemblée législative. Lorsque la guerre éclate en août 1914, il s’enrôle pour servir outre-mer et joint le 12e Bataillon en tant que major. En 1915, il se joint au 10e Bataillon, qui se trouve en France, et devient commandant pour une courte période seulement, puisqu’il est blessé en mai à la bataille de Festubert et est rapatrié pour raisons de santé. En revenant au Canada, il survit au naufrage du navire à bord duquel il se trouve, qui coule après l’attaque d’un sous-marin allemand. Une fois remis de ses blessures, il devient officier de recrutement provincial. En 1916, il est responsable de lever et de commander le 236e Bataillon (New Brunswick Kilties - Sir Sam’s Own). Une fois en Grande-Bretagne cependant, l’unité est démantelée pour constituer des renforts. Après la guerre, il déménage à Boston, où il reprend sa carrière d’avocat. Au cours de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, il réintègre l’armée pour servir à Ottawa. Percy A. Guthrie meurt en 1948. Il repose au cimetière Forest Hill.
