The GeoTrail
The New Brunswick Great War GeoTrail Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. It is our hope that you will learn from this GeoTrail and spend a moment to reflect on the sacrifices at home and abroad. Lest we forget

Historique
Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Nous espérons que vous trouverez cette activité enrichissante et que vous prendrez un instant pour songer aux sacrifices qu’ont accomplis ces gens, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger.

In 1871, Cyrus W. Peck was born in Hopewell Hill, NB and went to school there until his family moved to New Westminster, British Columbia when he was 16 years old. In 1914, he was working in Prince Rupert, BC, and at the outbreak of war he joined the 30th Battalion, CEF, was commissioned as a major, and went overseas. In 1916, he became the commanding officer of the 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish), CEF. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and Bar, was mentioned in dispatches five times, and was wounded twice. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for most conspicuous gallantry while leading his unit on 2 September 1918 during fighting for the Drocourt-Queant Line near Villers-lez-Cagnicourt. In 1917, while serving overseas he was elected to the House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Skeena, BC. After the war he entered provincial politics and served as a member of the legislative assembly for many years. Peck died in 1956 and is buried in Vancouver, BC.

Il a été décoré de la Croix de Victoria pour actes de bravoure alors qu’il était à la tête de son unité le 2 septembre 1918, pendant la bataille de la ligne de Drocourt-Quéant, près de Villers-lez-Cagnicourt. En 1917, pendant son service outre-mer, il a été élu député à la Chambre des communes pour la région de Skeena, en Colombie-Britannique. Après la guerre, il est entré en politique provinciale et a été membre de l’Assemblée législative pendant de nombreuses années. M. Peck est décédé en 1956 et il est enterré à Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique.
