The New Brunswick Great War Geocaching Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. It is our hope that you will learn from this GeoTrail and spend a moment to reflect on the sacrifices at home and abroad. Lest we forget

Historique
Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Nous espérons que vous trouverez cette activité enrichissante et que vous prendrez un instant pour songer aux sacrifices qu’ont accomplis ces gens, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger.

This cache location
Milton F. Gregg was born at Mountain Dale in Kings County, NB in 1892. During the First World War Gregg served as a sergeant in the Canadian medical corps and was later commissioned as a lieutenant in The Royal Canadian Regiment. In 1917, his actions in combat earned him the Military Cross, and then in September 1918 he was awarded the Victoria Cross for most conspicuous bravery and initiative near Cambrai in France. During the Second World War he again served overseas in several posts, finally retiring in 1943 with the rank of brigadier. Between 1944 and 1947 he was president of the University of New Brunswick. He then entered politics and was elected as a Member of Parliament and served as a cabinet minister in various portfolios for almost 10 years. Afterwards, he represented the United Nations in several overseas postings until 1968 when he retired from public life. Gregg died in 1978 and is buried in the Baptist Church Cemetery at Snider Mountain, NB.

Gregg était sergent dans le corps médical de l’armée canadienne avant d’être nommé lieutenant dans le Royal Canadian Regiment. En 1917, ses actes au combat lui ont valu la Croix militaire, puis en septembre 1918, il était décoré de la Croix de Victoria pour bravoure et initiative remarquables près de Cambrai, en France. Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il a de nouveau servi outre-mer dans plusieurs affectations avant de prendre sa retraite en 1943, après avoir atteint le grade de brigadier. De 1944 à 1947, il a été recteur de l’Université du Nouveau-Brunswick. Il s’est ensuite lancé en politique, a été élu député et, pendant près de dix ans, a été ministre responsable de divers portefeuilles. Par la suite, il a représenté les Nations Unies dans plusieurs affectations à l’étranger jusqu’en 1968, avant de prendre sa retraite de la vie publique. M. Gregg est décédé en 1978 et est enterré au cimetière de l’église baptiste de Snider Mountain, au Nouveau-Brunswick.
