Rippon Tor Ramble 1 - Nutcracker! Traditional Geocache

This is one of a series of caches on a walk of around 4 miles in the Rippon Tor area. Most of the walk is on moorland path/track and a little alongside the road. Please use the clearer paths rather than cutting across the gorse and bracken. The numbering in the series is based on starting with this cache and parking in the given car park but there is alternative parking near either the Seven Lords Lands cache and the Top Tor cache - see relevant cache page.

Please be aware of livestock and take care along the road for the first stretch of this walk.

From the parking area either follow the path starting in the corner of the car park and then head on to the road nearer the cache or alternatively start by walking on the road verge.

On the way to this cache you have lovely views over the Blackslade area and you can see the track which you will return on. As you walk along the road on the hill to the right you can see Nutcracker Rock. It got its name as locals used the rocking logan stone to crack their nuts. The remains of the Rippon Tor logan stone can be found here which was about 11 feet long and weighed about 14 tons. Originally it could be rocked by hand but unfortunately it no longer rocks due to vandalism, having survived the weather conditions for tens of thousands of years.
