Geocache Description:

This is the last of a series of caches on a walk of around 4 miles in the Rippon Tor area. Most of the walk is on moorland path/track and a little alongside the road. Please use the clearer paths rather than cutting across the gorse and bracken.

Please be aware of livestock.

The Cache is NOT in the wall

After exploring Whittaburrow and its cairn head across to the wall and then down to join the Tunhill Road again.

Before following the road downhill don't forget to visit the cist nearby (waypoint Cist)- a Bronze Age burial chest consisting of four slabs of granite forming a rectangular box. The lid of the chest is missing and so are the stones which would have formed a ring around it. It is supposedly at this spot that Jan Reynolds, a tinner from Widecombe, sold his soul to the Devil. This resulted in the Devil visiting Widecombe one Sunday in 1638 seizing Jan Reynolds who was fast asleep in the church at the same time as a violent thunderstorm was taking place.

The area opposite the cache is Blackslade Mire.

After finding the cache cross the ford using the stepping stones to help you and follow the track back to the car.

On the way back to the car you can see some boundary stones marked with an A and a B marking the boundary between Ashburton and Buckland-in-the-Moor parishes.

The weather on Dartmoor can change suddenly and unexpectedly and ALL types of weather conditions can be experienced. Please ensure that you have the correct clothing and map and compass (and know how to use them). Please do NOT rely solely on your GPS.

I would like to thank the Dartmoor National Park Authority for their kind permission to place this cache, which has been placed according to their geocaching guidelines.
