This is our first cache! First of all, we didn't realize the Black Mountain cache was that close to our chosen spot but overall this may be a good thing since not everyone will want to drive all the way up the mountain (30-45 minutes) on a washboard dirt road. Snowball Hill offers great views and a neato place to have a snowball fight and even sled down for we lower-elevation dwellers who need to drive up to the Idyllwild area for an afternoon of winter. If you end up going in winter, you may find this road unpassable without 4x4, but in the non-snow months, it is passable by most vehicles.
There is a turnoff near the cache and you can drive to within 150 feet of it. The cache is hidden under a rock but there is NO trail leading to it and the granite gravel on the slopes can be pretty darn slippery, so be careful. We used some dead logs to help conceal the location but from the right angle, it should be noticeable. This area seems pretty well used in summer so we needed to go off the beaten path a bit to keep non-players from finding it by mistake.
The cache is in a medium sized ammo box, army green. Inside you'll find:
Squishy big dice
City worker action figure with tools
McDonald’s BattleBots Pullback Action Toy
Piggy
Pencils
Small Log Book (maybe too small)
I was lazy and didn't average the coordinates from 12 different readings but any decent GPS unit should get you to within 40 feet and then it should be somewhat obvious.
