Geocache Description:

An addition to the popular Sidetracked series at what used to be the main train station at Monmouth - Monmouth Troy.

The Station

There were two stations in Monmouth, this one which was the largest and another at Mayhill. This station was opened on the 12th of October 1857 and had two platforms and a large goods yard. The station was closed to passengers in January 1959 and to freight five years later almost to the day.

Immediately to the west of the station is the short Monmouth Troy Tunnel which was fairly short at only 140 yards long and took the lines under Gibralar Hill.

After it closed the station was used as a storage and workshop area and inevitably ended up fairly run down but to save it from demolition it was taken apart brick by brick in 1986 and moved to Winchcombe, just NE of Cheltenham where it still stands. The large goods shed was demolished in 2002 to make way for the small estate where you probably parked your car. Very little remains now but you can still see parts of the platforms and the blocked up tunnel. To be honest the whole area has now been left to grow wild and is a bit of a mess but the cache is in keeping with this (sort of).

The Cache

Cache is a small sized tub. If you are driving access is only really from the parking waypoint in Troy Gardens off of Beech Road, but if you are walking you can approach from the old bridge to the east too. Either way there is NO direct access from the B4293 road above. When the cache was placed it was a bit of a jungle/very brambly too but I'm hoping this will die down a bit during the winter.

Once you find the cache you could take a short wander to the east where you can still cross the Wye on the old railway bridge.
