De l'esclavage à la contemplation
Dès son enfance, Saint Théau (ou Tillon) est enlevé à sa famille saxonne par des brigands. Jeune esclave il est racheté par Saint Eloi, évêque de Noyon, qui le libère, le baptise et le traite comme son fils. Il lui fait faire son apprentissage d’orfèvre à l’abbaye de Solignac. Théau accompagne Saint Eloi dans ses missions d’évangélisation des Flandres et des Pays Bas puis revient à Solignac. A la mort de Saint Eloi, en 659, il préfère la solitude à la vie en communauté et se retire à Nedde (Haute Vienne) puis à Brageac (Cantal).
A la fin de sa vie il revient en Limousin et prie humblement Godebert, abbé qui gouvernait le monastère, de lui faire bâtir une cellule en dehors des murs de l’abbaye. Théau s’installe en 698 dans cette cellule située près d’un important lieu de marché ou de passage qui deviendra le bourg du Vigen. Il y finit sa vie et y meurt en 702 presque centenaire. Plus tard il est enseveli sous le chevet de l’abbatiale de Solignac qui recèle son buste reliquaire. On dit que de nombreux miracles auraient été obtenus sur sa tombe et il fut prié pendant des siècles.
L'église Saint Mathurin du Vigen aurait été édifiée à l'emplacement de l'oratoire où Théau termina ses jours. Néanmoins, il ne reste aucun vestige de cet oratoire.
La construction de l’église se fit en deux campagnes : entre la fin du XIème siècle et le début du XIIème siècle pour nef, le transept et le chœur, au XIIIème siècle pour le clocher-mur à deux étages et le porche.
Le portail est de type limousin. En partie haute, un glacis maçonné reposant sur des modillons sculptés protège le portail des intempéries.
Lors des travaux réalisés en 2010/2011 des sondages furent entrepris pour préparer la campagne de restauration intérieure. Ils firent apparaître un décor ancien sous le décor géométrique du XIXème siècle.
Pourquoi "VERT" ?
Ma première cache posée (GC3VHY2) était une boîte verte, avec un stylo vert, un log book vert et des objets d'échange verts. Ainsi est née l'idée de placer les caches qui ont suivi sous le signe du "VERT" et de proposer un défi consistant à y déposer de préférence des objets "VERTs". Ce défi ne peut malheureusement pas concerner les caches de taille nano ou micro.

From the slavery to the pondering
From its childhood, Saint Théau (or Tillon) is deprived of his Saxon family by bandits. Young slave he is bought back by Saint Eloi, bishop of Noyon, who frees him, baptizes him and treats him as his son. He makes him his silversmith's apprenticeship in the abbey of Solignac. Théau accompanies Saint Eloi in his missions of evangelization of Flanders and Netherlands then returns to Solignac. In saint Eloi's death, in 659, he prefers the solitude to the life in community and withdraws to Nedde (Haute-Vienne) then to Brageac ( Cantal).
At the end of his life he returns in Limousin and asks humbly Godebert, abbot who governed the monastery, to make him build a cell outside the walls of the abbey. Théau settles down in 698 in this cell situated near an important place of market which will become the village of Vigen. He finishes his life there and dies there almost hundred-year-old in 702. Later he is buried under the bedhead of the abbey church of Solignac which holds its bust reliquary. It is said that numerous miracles would have been obtained on his grave and he was prayed during centuries.
The church Saint Mathurin in Le Vigen
The church Saint Mathurin in Le Vigen would have been built in the location of the oratory where Théau ended its days. Nevertheless, there is no vestige of this oratory.
The construction of the church was made in two campaigns : between the end of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century for the nave, the transept and the choir, in the 13rd century for the bell tower-wall and the hall.
The portal is of type Limousin. A built glacis basing on sculptured “modillons” protects the portal of the bad weather.
During the works realized in 2010/2011 boring were undertaken to prepare the campaign of internal restoration. They revealed a former decoration under the geometrical decoration of the 19th century.
Why "VERT" ?
My first geocache ( GC3VHY2) was a green box, with a green pen, a green log book and green items for exchange. So was born the idea to place the caches which followed under the sign of the "VERT" ("GREEN" in French) and to propose a game consisting in depositing there rather "VERT" objects. This game cannot unfortunately concern the caches in nano or micro size.
