Labour Day is an opportunity to celebrate workers' rights during parades and picnics organized by trade unions. Most Canadians, however, see the first Monday in September as an opportunity to take a late summer trip, to their cottage, or enjoy the company of family or friends at picnics, fairs, festivals and fireworks displays.
For teenagers and other students, the Labour Day weekend is the last chance to celebrate before school re-opens for the new academic year.
Background Information:
Labour Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September since the 1880s. The origins of Labour Day in Canada can be traced back to April 14, 1872 when a parade was staged in support of the Toronto Typographical Union's strike for a 58-hour work-week. The TTA had been on strike only 2 weeks, when George Brown, Canadian politician, pressed police into charging the TTA with "conspiracy." Although the laws criminalizing union activity were outdated and abolished in Great Britain, not in Canada and police arrested 24 leaders of the Typographical Union. In response, seven unions marched in Ottawa, prompting a promise by Canadian Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald to repeal the "barbarous" anti-union laws.
