The Church of St. Mary’s the Virgin, lies in the village of Clifton upon Dunsmore to the east of Rugby. This delightful village church was built in the 13th Century with 15th Century alterations and restored in the late 19th century. It is now a Grade II listed building. The church has a small late medieval west tower (there is an odd carving of a bear, halfway up the aisle on the wide side below a small window) with a 13th century nave and aisles showing possible earlier Norman work. The south porch is a late Victorian timber structure which replaced a Georgian brick porch.
The interior is light and spacious but very Victorian in feel due to the new chancel arch with two toned stonework. There are a number of unusual corbels with primitive faces. The furnishings are Victorian too as is the block shaped font.
The Victorian stained glass is of a high standard by Hardmans, Burlison & Grylis, Kempe and Comper.
It is open for visitors 10 am – 4 pm most days.
