Gergeti Trinity Church (in Georgian წმინდა სამება - Tsminda Sameba) is situated near the village of Gergeti, in Georgian part of Caucasus mountains, on the left bank of Terek river. Standing at 2170 meters above sea level, it is located on a steep hillside about 10 km east-southeast from Mount Kazbegi and less then 2 km west from Stepantsminda town.
The 14th century Georgian orthodox and apostolic church is a popular waypoint for trekkers in the area, and can be reached by a steep climb for 3 hours, or in half an hour by local taxi up a rough mountain trail.
Mount Kazbek (in Georgian ყაზბეგის მყინვარწვერი - Kazbegis Mkinvartsveri), a dormant stratovolcano, is the third highest mountain in Georgia and seventh highest in Great Caucasus. Its peak at 5047 m above sea level lays on the border of Georgia (Khevi province) and Russia (Republic of North Ossetia-Alania).
Mount Kazbek is covered by glaciers. Owing to the steepness of its slopes, they are not very large - the total combined area of all of Kazbek's glaciers is about 135 km². The name in Georgian, Mkinvartsveri, translates to "glacier".
Isolated location of Gergeti Trinity Church on top of a steep mountain surrounded by the vastness of nature with panorama of Mt Kazbeg on its background has made it a symbol for Georgia.
The cache:
The cache is located several metres below the Church on a place, where you can really enjoy the view on both dominating features of this part of Georgia. When picking up the cache, you should not be seen from the church.
The cache is just a PET bottle preform. There is only logbook and small pencil inside. Due to its size, there will be probably no place to drop any TB or GC.
Please, do not destroy neither rock nor vegetation by seeking for the cache and use spoiler photo. Thanks!
After you place the cache back, cover it by small flat stone again, please.
If you decide to take a taxi to the church, maximal terrain rating is 2.0.
