The Sheppey Light Railway when it opened used standard locomotives, however with a lower usage than expected they reconsidered and trials were conducted for petrol engine trains. The trials for one rail car was insufficient with just four seats, however a second 16 seat rail car proved sufficient. However, the rail remained steam due to a mechanic being impossible to find on Sheppey.
