The small village of Vavatsinia has not geocaching love, this series aims to fix that! Vavastinia has around 85 permanent residents who make a living mostly on agriculture. It is a short 10 km drive from Lefkara. Approaching Vavatsinia you notice the changing geography: going from white to red soil littered with pine trees.
The 2.5 km trail can be traversed mostly by car (if you have a 4 wheel drive), but I do recommend the walk as it is very scenic. The trail wraps around the mountain and what starts off as a view south to Limassol turn northwards giving a spectacular view of Nicosia on a clear day. Make sure to turn left at each fork in the road and follow the signs that will take you to the path up the mountain.
The cave was carved out of the mountain in the Frankish period by prospectors looking for copper. It is about a 20 meter descent from the geocache if you follow the trail. Tread with care if you wish to go inside and don’t forget to bring a flashlight!
The cache is a 35mm film canister.
