Geocache Description:

This cache is placed on a footpath which is the extension of a route known as Roman Road.  It was named such incorrectly, and there is no evidence that this was the Roman Road in Wheatley.  Formerly Roman Road was known as Muddy Way and led from the old turnpike road (London Road) into the village past the Crown Inn (now a private residence) and the High Street.  That there were Romans in or near Wheatley is beyond dispute as remains of a Roman villa were excavated in 1845 on the hill to the south of Roman Road (now called Castle Hill), so it is nice to think that perhaps there was a Roman road hereabouts which crossed the river Thame by a ford and continued on towards Worcester (Oxford being unimportant or non-existent in Roman times).

The cache is placed at the junction of two paths; the extension of Roman Road and a public footpath leading down from Castle Hill, which continues through to Cuddesdon.  The Roman Road footpath appears to be a "green route" between various fields.  An approach either from Wheatley village or from Asda requires the crossing of a stile and this cache is therefore unsuitable for geoachers with limited mobility.  When visiting the site to hide the cache it was summertime and the footpath (Roman Road) was heavily overgrown.  At other times of the year the going may be easier, although the River Thame has been known to flood in autumn and winter months recently making an approach from that direction extremely hazardous.

Presently, the cache is a nano, but it may be replaced with something larger at a later date.

Please carefully replace cache as found or else it might disappear somewhere inaccessible (this already happened when checking that the cache was where it should be!)

Congratulations Team Lankidden on your FTF (second attempt)!
