A l'origine le site était un lieu de recueillement clandestin des premiers chrétiens, sur le tombeau de St Valérien, décapité en 178. Au VIeme siècle, une communauté monastique y est fondée par le roi de Bourgogne. Puis en 875, l'Abbaye, ses dépendances et la ville de Tournus sont offertes par l'empereur Carles le Chauve aux moines de l'abbaye St Philibert de Noirmoutiers qui fuyaient alors les invasions vikings.

The abbey church of Tournus is one of the largest Romanesque monuments of France. An association is campaigning to its classification as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
Originally the site was a place of secret contemplation for the early Christians on the tomb of St Valerian, beheaded in 178. In the sixth century, a monastic community is founded by King of Burgundy. Then in 875, the abbey, its outbuildings and the town of Tournus are offered by Emperor Charles le Chauve to the St philibert monks of Noirmoutiers to protect them from Viking invasion.
