Casal Novo do Rio, ou simplesmente Barca, é uma pequena povoação a cerca de dois quilómetros da vila de Montemor-o-Velho e que, dizem os antigos, no sítio, onde hoje em dia se encontra o vértice geodésico, albergou a forca da vila.
O povo deste lugar vivia com água do rio a murmurar a seus pés, sorrindo-lhes no verão e pregando-lhes sustos e aflições no inverno.

Casal Novo Rio, or just Barca, is a small village about two kilometers from Montemor-o-Velho village and which, the old saying, on the site where today lies the geodesic vertex, hosted the gallows of the village.
The people of this place lived with the river murmuring at their feet, smiling at them in the summer and causing them alarms and afflictions in the winter.

A Barca é assim conhecida por ter sido um dos locais na zona que promovia a passagem para a outra margem utilizando uma barcaça a quem necessitava, ou porque se encontrava em viagem ou porque necessitava de ir para as terras de cultivo que se encontram além-Mondego com seus carros e bois que os puxavam, as alfaias agrícolas e os produtos necessários. Chegava a levar três carros, era movido pela força de braços do barqueiro e da sua vara e não tinha corda de segurança.

Barca is thereby known for being one of the places in the area that promoted the passage to the other shore, using a barge (barca), to whom was needed, because of their traveling or because of the need to reach the farmlands found beyond the Mondego river. They took in the barge their oxen and wagons, their agricultural tools and the necessary products. The barge took up to three cars and was moved by the boatman's force of arms and his staff, and it had no safety rope.

O barqueiro recolhia-se numa construção simples e pequena, ali perto do rio e passava os seus dias e noites sempre atento a quem o chamava duma ou doutra margem.

The boatman lived in a simple and small building, nearby the river and spent his days and nights always aware of who called him from a margin or another.

Mais tarde, foi construída a Ponte das Lavadeiras, uma ponte de ferro, que levou à extinção da barcaça e do seu barqueiro. Dessa ponte, que ruíu nas grandes cheias de 2001, resta o pilar que se encontra na margem sul do rio a escassos metros a jusante da nova ponte.

Later, the Bridge of Lavadeiras (washerwomen) was built, an iron bridge, which led to the extinction of the barge and its boatman. Of this bridge, which collapsed in the great flood of 2001 remains the pillar that lies on the south bank of the river a few meters downstream of the new concrete bridge.

Também na Barca houve, em tempos, uma construção conhecida por Barracão do Sal, que armazenava grandes quantidades de sal que as barcaças traziam da Figueira da Foz, rio acima, numa altura em que o rio Mondego era navegável, entre a cidade dos doutores e a cidade da praia da claridade. O barracão era de madeira e um símbolo do pequeno lugar. Pode-se observá-lo, nesta fotografia, à direita junto ao rio.

Also in Barca there was, once, a building known as the Salt's Shed, which stored large amounts of salt brought by barges from Figueira da Foz, upstream, at a time when the Mondego river was navigable, between the town of doctors (Coimbra) and the city of the Clarity's Beach (Figueira da Foz). The shed was made of wood and was a symbol of this small village. One can observe it, in this photograph, on the right by the river.

Uma réplica desse barracão foi inaugurado, em 2011, na Festa da Barca, que se realiza no segundo fim de semana de junho de cada ano.

Nessa inauguração foi declamado este poema da autoria das barquenses Antónia Rodrigues e D.ª Laurinda:
Recordar o passado deste novo barracão do sal
Foi hoje aqui recordado,
algo de tradicional:
uma réplica do passado,
Antigo Barracão do sal
Rio acima, barco à vela,
p´ra chegar a todos nós;
assim era transportado,
sal da Figueira da Foz.
Quando não havia vento,
então é que era pior!
navegavam à sirga e vara,
com muito esforço e suor.
À vela, à sirga e à vara,
debaixo de sol e frio;
assim os homens faziam,
o barco subir o rio.
E quando pró fim chegavam, não podiam descansar;
a viagem terminava,
mas tinham de descarregar.
Aí, já tinham ajuda,
as mulheres os esperavam;
com cestas à cabeça, assim o armazenavam.
O Casal Novo do Rio,
regista com simpatia;
a bonita iniciativa,
da Junta de Freguesia.
Três anos depois, em 2014, foi inaugurado o monumento ao barquense que esta cache também pretende homenagear.

Remember the past of this new salt's shed (Naif translation)
It was here today remembered
something traditional:
a past's replica
Old Salt's Shed
Upstream, sailing boat,
to get to us all;
That was how it was transported
Figueira da Foz's salt.
When there was no wind,
that was the worse situation!
They sailed to tow and stick,
with great effort and sweat.
With sails, ropes and sticks,
under the sun and cold;
so men made
the boat go up the river.
And when they came to the end, they could not rest;
the trip was over,
but they had to unload.
There, help was prepared:
the women were waiting for them;
with baskets on their heads, that's how they stored it.
The Casal Novo do Rio
notes with sympathy;
this beautiful initiative
of the Village Council.
Three years later, at 2014, it was inaugurated the monument to that barquense, which this cache also aims to honor.
