Jacques Cartier, est un navigateur et explorateur malouin . Né en 1491 à Saint-Malo , il y meurt le 1^er septembre 1557 . Auteur de cartes ayant permis l'apparition du golfe du Saint-Laurent sur les représentations du globe, Cartier, par ses Relations, est le premier Européen à décrire et nommer ces eaux, leurs rives et leurs habitants, et le territoire visité qu'il nomme Canada.

Jacques Cartier (Breton: Jakez Karter; December 31, 1491 – September 1, 1557) was a French explorer of Breton origin who claimed what is now Canada for France. Jacques Cartier was the first European to describe and map the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence River, which he named "The Country of Canadas", after the Iroquois names for the two big settlements he saw at Stadacona (Quebec City) and at Hochelaga (Montreal Island).
