Built in 1820, Christ Church is the only Church in the village. It has close connections with the local junior and infant school. The ecclesiastical parish was formed in 1858 from Halifax . The church is a building of stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, vestry, south porch, and a turret containing 2 bells. The east window was filled with stained glass in 1883, in pursuance of a bequest by the late Mr. Daniel Collins, and in 1902 a memorial window was placed to Mrs Elizabeth B. Horton. There are sittings for 450 persons.
Barkisland has evidence of habitation stretching back 10.000 years ago into the Stone Age. There are differing theories into the origins of the name, one of which is the Anglo-Saxon ' district where there are wolves'.
Opposite the main enterance to the church is a War Memorial with the names of the fallen from WWI and WWII. at http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/server/show/conMemorial.2636/fromUkniwmSearch/1
