Geocache Description:

Ellison “Cottontop” Mounts (1864 - 1890)

Ellison Mounts was hanged in Pikeville Kentucky today February 2nd 1890 for the murder of Alifair McCoy.

Known by his friends as Cottontop he was executed for his actions during a raid on the home of Randolph McCoy, Alifair’s father. During the attack the McCoy cabin was burned to the ground and two of Randolph’s children were killed.

The 25 year old Mounts pled guilty to the murder of Alifair but later recanted his confession. The deceased was said to be the illegitimate son of Ellison Hatfield who was murdered by three of Alifair McCoy’s brothers in 1882.

Ellison Mounts was also the nephew of famous feudist Devil Anse Hatfield. Mounts was tried along with several members of the Hatfield clan for their part in murders associated with the long running feud between the Hatfield and McCoy families.

Mounts is survived by his mother Harriett Mounts and wife Rebecca Justice Mounts. Burial details are being withheld from the public for fear of desecration of the grave.
