Geocache Description:

Bill Dempsey (? - 1888)

Bill Dempsey was killed during a clash between Hatfield and McCoy factions at Grapevine Creek yesterday.

The long running feud between the Hatfield and McCoy families took another victim. An illegal raiding party headed up by Frank Phillips crossed into West Virginia seeking to capture members of the Hatfield clan. The Logan County sheriff’s office deputized a posse to intercept the unlawful Kentucky incursion. Dempsey was one of those deputized. The two groups met at Grapevine Creek, a tributary of the Tug River.

Dempsey was said to have been wounded during the shootout and tried to surrender. However Frank Phillips refused to accept his surrender and shot him dead.

Further details of services for Dempsey have not yet been released.
