Geocache Description:

The Wisconsin Dells are incredibly well-known for the amount of waterparks in the town of just over 2,500. However, the geology of the Dells is spectacular as well. This EarthCache (showcasing "Sugar Bowl Island") will be the 15th currently running EC in geology-rich Sauk County. Parking and a launch are available at Newport Park, just off of Highway A. There is also a USGS streamflow gauge along the route to the rock. Coords are included.

To get to Sugar Bowl Island, you will need to take your vessel on a .4 mile journey NE on the Wisconsin River. Any boat will work, as the Wisconsin River allows motors. However, if you are in a canoe, kayak, or any other small vessel, be minful of larger boats creating wakes around you.

Geology of Sugar Bowl Island

Sugar Bowl Island has gone through a bevy of changes over the years, mostly due to erosion. Here are some types of erosion which may have affected the rock formation:

Wind Erosion- This occurs when winds have been blowing on something for years, causing a structure to change. For example, the winds may blow on a sedimentary rock and take the finer parts of the rock away, leaving the coarse part to stay.

Water Erosion- This occurs when a structure is subjected to moving water over a very long period of time. Holes may be carved in a structure, and parts of the structure may be whittled down to almost nothing.

Root Pry- This occurs when trees or other large plants set up shop inside of the rock. The rotts grow deeper and deeper, breaking the rock apart.

With this knowledge in your brain (or your GPS), determine the answers to the following questions:

1. Which type of erosion is affecting the TOP of Sugar Bowl Island?

2. Which type of erosion is affecting the BASE of Sugar Bowl Island?

3. You can also take a picture at the Island if you would like. They are always appreciated! CONGRATS TO J&K&KIDS ON THE FTF!
