Piltene - Ventas vecās gultnes labajā krastā, 22 km no Ventspils. Reiz šai pilsētaiKurzemes vēsturē bija ievērojama loma. Sākot no 13. gs. beigām līdz 16. gadsimtam Piltene bija Kurzemes bīskapijas, bet vēlākajos gadsimtos – Piltenes apgabala centrs.

Pilsētas ģerbonis – ģerboņa vairogs ar horizontālu dalījumu, augšējā sarkanajā laukā zelta lode virs diviem sakrustotiem bīskapa sudraba zižļiem, apakšējā sudraba laukā trīs sarkani torņi ar sarkaniem karodziņiem to galos Ģerbonis apstiprināts 1925. gadā.
