This cache has been archived.

JerseyEric: This was a fun cache to place because of all the visitors from near and far to Princeton. It appears the container is missing. Time to archive.

Geocache Description:

This oversized bison tube is hidden in a tiny public space with benches on Paul Robeson Place in downtown Princeton. BYOP - Bring your own pen.  This small-sized container is big enough to hold geocoins and tiny travel bugs.

After finding this geocache, I suggest that you walk to the corner of Paul Robeson Place and Witherspoon, where you'll find a statue of Robeson in front of an arts center.

Congrats to Heinz55 for the FTF -- her first ever FTF!

About Paul Robeson (1898 - 1976)

I have always associated Paul Robeson with New Brunswick, NJ and my alma mater Rutgers College, where Robeson earned his undergraduate degree.  So I was quite surprised to find a street in Princeton named after Robeson, since Robeson never attended Princeton University.

I subsequently learned that Robeson was born in Princeton, where his father was minister of Princeton's Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church.

Paul Robeson was the epitome of the 20th-century Renaissance man. He was an exceptional athlete, actor, singer, cultural scholar, author, and political activist, who lived as a child in the neighborhood near where this geocache was hidden.  Robeson was the 3rd African-American to attend Rutgers College (now part of Rutgers University - New Brunswick), where he was an All-American football player and was elected class valedictorian.  Robeson earned a law degree from Columbia University while playing in the National Footbal League.  The son of an escaped slave, Robeson was the first major concert star to popularize the performance of Negro spirituals and was the first black actor of the 20th century to portray Othello on Broadway.
