Geocache Description:

A library with a difference - the reading room is vast! Please pay attention to the description below. The library is NOT at the listed coordinates; these mark a track junction and provide the degrees and minutes for the final location (you'll need to work out the decimal minutes by solving the puzzle below). Parking at the end of Beaumont Road, as indicated.

The old Gundah Ridge Library was established in stepped sandstone terrain just off the Gundah Ridge Track at the end of Beaumont Road in April, 2014. It was ransacked in July resulting in its removal from its former location. The library trustees have decided to move the main library to a new location (now re-open! see Gundah Ridge Library - Fight Club) and have approved the establishment of a sub-branch at a new site along Gundah Ridge. Hopefully less likely to be visited by muggles.

The sub-branch has been dedicated to George Orwell's classic: 1984, and this is the library's only title. In order to locate the cache you'll have to solve a puzzle; the details are below.

The library rules are simple: There's only one book: The Gundah Ridge Library Special Edition of George Orwell's classic 1984. This must stay in the library. Feel free to read it in the reading room. We can't lend this classic tale but the related web page links to an online copy via the Gutenberg Project.

The library has some magnificent views over some northern suburbs bushland. You are welcome to stay as long as you like, and visit as often as you like.

The library is open all year round 24/7. Careful observation will reveal the way in. The interior lighting is a little low so a torch might come in handy but is not essential. If you come after dark you'll definitely be needing a torch and take great care not to fall off anything.

In your log please include a comment on Orwell's classic or note one of your favourite books and why. The librarians are always interested in new titles that might be of interest to borrowers. Oh...the final rule, please close the door on your way out and replace everything as found, especially any additional camo.....now Shhh, and do be careful of what you find in Rm 101.

THE PUZZLE

While preparing the Gundah Ridge Special edition of 1984 we came across a fragment of Orwell's original draft manuscript that somehow fell through a gap in the space-time continuum. It contains a different version of the first physical encounter between Winston and Julia. A scanned copy is reproduced below. There was also another note marked "Spires" Enjoy!

Thanks to Baktrak, Yurt, sjamp and jono9 for FTF. The tyranny of Big Brother one step closer to falling.

PROJECT MAYHEM/BROTHERHOOD TASK: To celebrate the re-opening of the Main Branch of the Library (see Gundah Ridge Library - Fight Club) a special mystery prize is available to the first 15 cachers who successfully complete the Gundah Ridge Library -1984/Fight Club puzzle combo.
