The River
The River Noe runs for approximately 12 miles from its source, two smaller streams running off Kinder Scout, to the river Derwent south of Bamford. On the way it flows east on a meandering course through the Edale Valley.
The Edale Valley was settled in the 13th Century along the river, originally established as cattle farms, and since then having developed into the five main hamlets of Upper Booth, Barber Booth, Grindsbrook Booth (Edale itself), Ollerbrook Booth and Nether Booth.
Historically the river was used to power water mills, and there are still some remnants of this industrial past through the valley, when mills included corn mills, cotton mills and a sawmill at Hope, which was driven by an 11ft water wheel.
The Cache
This can either be done as a diversion from a nearby walking route, or as a drive-by for those not inclined to walk for a few miles. Although the co-ordinates for the cache will, at first glance, take you to the middle of the road near the viaduct, the cache is not in the road or near it. You first need to go to the waypoint indicated, then look where your GPS is pointing and you will see how to get to the cache.
Unless you enjoy getting wet, you will need wellies to get to the cache - even in summer. You'll need a torch too. In winter or following heavy rain it could well be quite deep here, and the current could be quite strong (it is quite fast flowing even in summer).
Therefore, please assess the water level and current before attempting this cache, and use common sense to decide whether the conditions are favourable. If you do not feel comfortable attempting it, please do not do so.
You're looking for a small camoflaged 30ml tube inbetween stones, about halfway along on the right. It is set back a little bit so it doesn't stick out and get muggled. Please replace it exactly as found so that it can't fall out or be easily spotted. There isn't a pen in the cache, so please bring one with you as you do need to sign the log to claim a find.
Please note, this cache will be disabled from the beginning of April until the end of June, due to Dippers nesting very close to GZ. Please do not attempt to search for the cache when it is disabled.
