Geocache Description:

An adventure to a lonely ruined fort.

Fort Duvernette is a fort constructed on a rocky island not far off the coast of St Vincent and just behind Young Island. To reach it you will need water transport - there are kayaks for rent at the Paradise Beach Hotel nearby if you're up for a bit of a paddle. It's a small hike to the top where the fort and the cache is.  The fort was built on a number of levels facing in different directions - tellingly the guns could be aimed by the colonial military both towards oceanic invaders and the island itself to assist in putting down rebellions. It was built by the British in the 1790s, despite its French name, at the height of tensions between the Afro-Caribbeans and the British. The nearby settlement of Calliqua, visible from the fort, was once the capital and key port for the colony of St Vincent and its sugar trade. The fort was needed thus to protect commerce, defend against the French, and quell any resistence from the black or slave populations.  There is a nominal fee to be paid to visit the site - tickets can be aquired from the National Trust in the Old Public Library building in Kingstown.  Note: The cache may have gone missing, so if you are feeling enthusiastic, please help with a new box and book! The local cache guardian has gone awol.....
