Geocache Description:

BYOP. A camo'ed matchstick container well-hidden in the grounds of St Paul's Anglican Church (with permission of the priest). Please re-hide well to protect from muggles. Ft Chipewyan had no caches, so I thought it time to place one. The cache itself is winter-friendly, but accessibility in winter will depend on how deep the snow is. Use your own good judgement.

Chip (as Ft Chipewyan is affectionately known by residents) is one of my all-time favourite places, both for the people who have become dear friends and the beauty of the landscape. I love to sit on the church step and look out over the beach and lake towards Potato Island. Potato Island was originally known as Coal Island but the name was changed when the mission started growing potatoes on the island. The island was the location of the first Hudson's Bay Post, Fort Wederburn, built by John CLark in 1815. The post on the mainland was the Northwest Company Post. After several years of fur trade wars between the two posts, the Hudson Bay Company won and moved to the mainland post in 1821. St Paul`s is the oldest Anglican Church in Alberta. Building began in 1876 and the church was consecrated on Easter Sunday 1880 by Bishop Bompas. The original stained glass windows above the altar were brought from England in molasses barrels to protect them. The building is a `post on sill`construction. It was extended in the 1920`s by Bishop Lucas and the exterior covered with cedar drop siding. The interior lumber was hand-planed and if you look carefully, you can still see the grooves made by the hand tools. The interior walls are decorated with hand-painted scrolls. Some of the original furniture is still in regular use including the altar, Bishop`s chair, font, pulpit, and two hand-made pews. When it`s really cold in winter the furnace heat is supplemented by the old wood stove. St. Paul`s is a functioning parish church, so please be respectful when looking for the cache. I hope you enjoy the search and love this community that is steeped in history.
