Geocache Description:

One to add to the church micro series, a pretty church and well maintained cemetery on the outskirts of Newcastle.

St John's Whorlton, Westerhope. Newcastle upon Tyne.

Although the hamlet of Whorlton is long gone, the church that it served is still standing.
Built in 1866 to serve the local farming and mining communities it could house a congregation of 200. The mine has since closed and nothing remains to show that this area housed such and industry.
The church was extended in 1911.

Of particular note is its beautiful East window, designed by Duncan Short of Darlington and manufactured by Mark Smith In Newcastle. The window was installed in 1999.
It is based on Genesis 1.1. Air,wind, fire and earth stream down from heaven to interact with the earth and the humans on it. Mixing with the elements it swirls round forming a spiral that has a coal seam as its centre.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first atchurchmicro@gmail.com so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.

There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list

You will need to bring tweezers and a pen/pencil for this one. It is not in the church grounds nor the cemetry.
