Geocache Description:

Very easy cache in a neat little place with just a bit of history!

296,000,000 gallons of water.......Thats what this contains when full!

This cache will take you directly in front of the aerator for the Monhagen Reservoir.

The reservoir you see here was the result of some far sighted citizens of the Village of Middletown way back in 1866 who knew a good water supply would be needed to grow. After some discussion the chose this site and approved a bond of $75,000.00 for the construction of the reservoir and a 10 inch concrete pipeline to extend from the reservoir into the village. The reservoir was completed in 1867.

Sitting 161' above the business section of the city it covers 74 acres and is 24' deep at its maximum.

After a few years the reservoir had not filled completly as the village had hoped and in 1873 a large pump was placed somewhere along the Shawangunk Kill and 3 1/2 miles of wood stave pipe ran from the kill to the reservoir at the cost of $60,000 almost as much as the original project!

I hope you enjoy the area for a few minutes as there is tons of wildlife around......please be respectful!
