Geocache Description:

Church Micro 5901 ... Osgathorpe

Thanks to la lunatica for kindly publishing this for my son Jay's 8th birthday 12th June 2004 as these are dedicated to him :) CONGRATULATIONS to theyompinggnomes on the FTF!!

Another beautiful church that often gets overlooked is the St Mary The Bless Virgin church in our neighbouring village of Osgathorpe.

The small peaceful village of Osgathorpe lies tucked away in a fold of hills in the north-west of the county, easily missed by passing travellers. It has often been said that anyone coming here either lives in the village or is lost! But despite its small size Osgathorpe has a history dating back well before the Doomsday Book in which it is mentioned. Clues to its origin lie with the ford and spring, still used for drinking water, and the nearby remains of a quarry at Barrow Hill. Several of the houses in the village are built of local stone.

The church of St Mary the Blessed Virgin lies at the heart of Osgathorpe. The original chapel foundation dates from about 1204 with the chancel being built during the 13th and 14th century. The tower and vestry were erected in 1931. The church has a wonderful pipe organ of an unusual quality for a village church and competent pianists are encouraged to learn to play.

This church is part of a wider group of parishes which include Belton, Diseworth, Long Whatton, Hathern and Kegworth.

Thank you taking the time to look for my second church micro hide.

If anybody would like to expand this series please do, i would just ask that you would let Sadexploration know first at churchmicro@gmail.com so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the bookmark list.
