A cruz (†), do latim cruce, é uma figura geométrica formada por duas linhas ou barras que se cruzam em um ângulo de 90°, dividindo uma das linhas, ou ambas, ao meio. As linhas normalmente se apresentam na horizontal e na vertical; se estiverem na diagonal, a figura é chamada de sautor, ou aspa.
A cruz é um dos símbolos humanos mais antigos e é usada por diversas religiões, principalmente a católica, embora nem todos os cristãos a usem como símbolo.
Na subcultura gótica, este símbolo geralmente é a representação do sofrimento, dor ou angústia.
Provavelmente esta definição tenha o sentido original, já que em Roma antes mesmo da morte de Cristo, era usado para esta finalidade. Uma das formas de condenação à morte consistia em atar ou pregar condenados em uma cruz, fazendo os mesmos padecer terrivelmente.
