The fire started on May the 5th, 1893, and it was the largest fire that happened in Valpovo in its history. It originated outside the city, but the fire was assisted by strong wind and quickly spread through the neighboring streets. The wind blew burning straw throughout whole Valpovo. A total of 36 family houses were burned down, 102 outbuildings and 108 people were left on the street.
In the May the 4th, 1896 a statue of St. Florian was erected, protector of firefighters, at the site where a major fire was finally put out. To commemorate this event, every year on the eve of the feast of St. Florian, firefighters parade is held and accompanied by the music of the orchestra of DVD Valpovo which is also one of the oldest wind Orchestra in Croatia. Parade through the streets of Valpovo ends at this point with a blessing of firefighters. Todays statue is set in the early 1990s, while the original is held in the castle in the Museum of Valpovo after a recent restoration.
