Dia 36 - Recusa
 — Afinal, que quer de mim? disse ao agente de polícia, contendo-se com supremo esforço.
— O seguinte, respondeu Fix. Segui o senhor Fogg até aqui, mas ainda não recebi o mandado de prisão, que pedi a Londres. É preciso portanto que me ajude a retê-lo em Hong Kong e reparto consigo a gratificação de duas mil libras prometida pelo Banco da Inglaterra!
— Jamais! respondeu Passepartout, que se queria levantar e voltou a cair na cadeira, sentindo a razão e as forças a fugirem-lhe. Senhor Fix, mesmo que tudo o que me disse fosse verdade... mesmo que meu patrão fosse o ladrão que procura... o que nego... traí-lo... jamais... nem por todo o ouro do mundo... Sou de um vilarejo onde não se come esse pão!.. Recuso.
— Façamos de conta que não disse nada, e bebamos.
— Sim, bebamos!
Passepartout se sentia cada vez mais dominado pela embriaguez. Fix, compreendendo que era preciso separá-lo do patrão, quis completar a tarefa. Sobre a mesa havia alguns cachimbos cheios de ópio. Fix empurrou um subtilmente para a mão de Passepartout, que o pegou, acendeu, deu algumas baforadas e desabou, a cabeça aturdida sob a influência do narcótico.
— Afinal, disse Fix vendo Passepartout aniquilado, o senhor Fogg não será avisado a tempo da partida do Carnatic, e se partir irá ao menos sem este maldito francês!
Day 36 - Refuse
 ‘But what do you want of me?’ he asked the policeman, holding himself back with a supreme effort.
‘The following. I’ve tailed Mr Fogg as far as here, but I still haven’t got the arrest warrant I need from London. So you must help me keep him here in Hong Kong, and I’ll split the reward of £ 2,000 from the Bank of England!’
‘Never!’ replied Passepartout trying to get up, but feeling his reason and strength abandoning him. ‘Mr Fix, even if everything you’ve told me was true . . . even if my master really was the thief you’re looking for . . . which I deny . . . Betray him? . . . Never. . . . Not for all the tea in China. . . . Where I come from, we don’t do such things. I refuse.’
‘Then please forget what I said, and let’s drink.’
‘Yes, let’s have another drink!’
Passepartout felt himself more and more overcome by the alcohol. Fix realized that he had to separate him from his master, and wanted to finish him off. On the table were a few pipes of opium. Fix pushed one into Passepartout’s hand, who took it, lit it, took a few puffs, and then slumped down, his head weighed down by the narcotic.
‘So,’ said Fix when he saw Passepartout collapse. ‘Mr Fogg will not be told about the Carnatic’s departure in time, and even if he does manage to leave, at least it will be without this confounded Frenchman!’
