Geocache Description:

This is the fifth Church Micro I’ve placed, and I decided that such a delightful church is deserving of something rather more interesting than a bog standard Traditional or a Multi. Therefore I have made a bit of a challenge of it (but this is not a Challenge Cache).

In order to find the cache, you will need to do some research at the church itself, and on line or elsewhere, and preferably have found my previous four Church Micros1 (hence the difficulty rating).

St Mary’s is a charming 14th century Grade I listed building, constructed of local flint and stone with a stone and timber porch. The square tower is embellished with a chequered pattern in flint and stone and houses three bells.

Puttenham is known as one of the “Thankful Villages” (the only one in Hertfordshire), so called because all the inhabitants who enlisted and went off to fight in the Great War of 1914-18 returned alive. Inside the church is a stone tablet listing the names of all those concerned 2. How many individuals where there? This will give you A B. The number of different surnames will give you C, and the number of letters in the most repeated surname will give you D.

In the churchyard seek out the memorial to Joan Newman, Founder of the Puttenham Trust. Her dates were 19E1 to 200F.

Elsewhere in the churchyard is a memorial to Thomas Chapman, Churchwarden here for 5G years.

As you wander round the outside of this charismatic building, note the housing for the spiral staircase in the angle between the south wall of the tower and the west wall of the south nave. How many narrow, vertical slit windows are there visible from the outside? This will give you H.

Round all four sides of the tower, how many leaden rainwater spouts protrude below the battlements of the main tower and the stairwell tower? Call this number J.

One last value to collect here, for K. In the south wall of the chancel is a small wooden door. How many square-headed bolts secure the upper hinge?

Let W be the same as value E from Church Micro 3668

Let X be the same as value G from Church Micro 2566

Let Y be the same as value B from Church Micro 5750

Let Z be the same as value F from Church Micro 5763

The cache is a short stroll away at

N 51° 4[(ExY)+X].[(K+W)-D][(GxA)-H][(C+Z)xF]
W 00° 4[(B-J)+E].[(XxY)-C][(W+F)-G][(K+Z)-(D+H)]

1 The four Church Micros you should preferably find before attempting this cache are:
GC4E718 Church Micro 3668 … Aston Abbotts
GC8XBJT Church Micro 2566 ... Waddesdon Hill Resurrected
GC5464M Church Micro 5750 ... Bledlow
GC549HA Church Micro 5763 ... Piddington
Groundspeak guidelines do not allow me to make logging finds on these Church Micros a requirement, it is purely an 'optional task', but it would be good if you did!
