The Cache - Kätkö

The geocache is a rather basic box of 1.2 liters, just go and grab it and sign the logbook. Please return the box taking the encrypted hint's instructions into account. Spoiler warning! The hint is extremely accurate! In case you try to return the box too high you'll likely face fitting problems causing other troubles. Afterwards, take a while standing on the bridge and have a guided tour, or actually a guided spin. Welcome!

The Guided Spin Now you're standing on an old railroad swing bridge dating back from the late 19th century. The temporary spiral-like wooden structure right next to the bridge was built to be a tourist information and ferry ticket sales centre for the new Helsinki Biennial for contemporary art. During winter time the construction will be covered and unaccessible.

The nearest islands in the southwest are called Valkosaari and Luoto. A bit further in the southwest you may see the lighthouse in the tower of the Suomenlinna sea fortress church. The mentioned Biennial will be organised near Suomenlinna on Vallisaari island in uneven years from the year 2021 onwards.

At the sea shore to the right you'll see passanger harbours. Take also a look on the grey building with the text PALACE on the top of it. It is built to resemble a great passanger ferry and it's occupied by several major organisations of Finnish businesses and industries.

Next to you is the quite recently renovated Old Market Hall (est. 1889). A bit to the right, in the street corner, is a building which in the older days was labelled as the Shadow Foreign Ministry of Finland. Then it was occupied by powerful export cartels of Finnish pulp and paper industries. Since the 1990's it served as the headquarters of the global giant UPM-Kymmene Corporation. Nowadays UPM has left the building as has a significant part of forest industries left Finland. Today Borenius, a major law firm, has its main office there.

The fountain statue by Ville Vallgren in front of the forest industry building is popularly called Manta (orig. Havis Amanda). Once a year, in the eve of the First of May, there's a big celebration when Manta gets a student cap. Once in her lifetime, in Aug-Oct 2014, she got a hotel room above and around her!

On the North side of the Market Square, along the Pohjoisesplanadi street, there's a row of significant buildings. The wide light blue one was originally a hotel, today it's the City Hall. Behind it you'll see the main tower of the Helsinki Cathedral designed by C. L. Engel, a German architect favoured by Tsar Alexander I of Russia.

The brown building is Embassy of Sweden and in front of it, in the middle of the Market Square, is The Stone of the Empress. Together the embassy building and the obelisk represent a main story in Finnish history, that is being a part of either Swedish or Russian realms.

A couple of buildings further to the right, before the major intersection, there's a palace-like building. Originally it was a merchant house with shops downstairs but Engel re-designed it to be a Resident for the Russian Emperor. Today it serves as the Presidential Residence, although no president of Finland has lived there for a couple of decades. On the left side of the palace is the building of the Supreme Court of Finland. (Montesquieu might have found this a bit troubling.)

Then there's the sugarcube-like corporate former headquarters of Stora Enso Corporation covered with white marble. (Today it's a hotel.) It's been said that its designer Alvar Aalto wanted to continue the row of palazettos along the Pohjoisesplanadi ('Northern Esplanade') street. In any case it creates a huge contrast with the orthodox Uspenski Cathedral behind it. The cathedral itself is a one more demonstration of the Imperial Russian influence here.

So, the guided spin ends towards Katajanokka peninsula. The Ferris wheel was opened in June, 2014. A ride in the VIP cabin costs only 195 euros including a bottle of champagne. After that, you may want to have a sauna below and jump into the seawater pool. Have lots of fun in Helsinki!

Opastettu pyörähdys Purkilta noustuasi seisot yli satavuotiaalla entisen rantaradan kääntösillalla. Vastarannalla näkyy sillanvartijan työpiste. Aivan sillan vieressä oleva spiraalimainen puurakennelma on pystytetty uuden nykytaidetapahtuman Helsinki Biennaalin turistiopastus- ja lauttalippumyyntikeskukseksi. Väliaikainen rakennelma suljetaan ja katetaan talviajoiksi.

Kaakon suunnalla lähimmät saaret ovat Valkosaari ja Luoto. Niiden takaa saatat erottaa Suomenlinnan kirkon tornin. Luterilaisessa hengessä se toimii myös majakkana. Mainittu biennaali järjestetään parittomina vuosina Suomenlinnan itäpuolisessa Vallisaaressa vuodesta 2021 lähtien.

Rannan matkustajasatamien vieressä on valtamerialusta muistuttamaan suunniteltu rakennus, osoite on Eteläranta 10 ja katolla lukee PALACE. Siellä ovat talon valmistumisesta saakka majailleet Suomen tärkeimmät teollisuus- ja työnantajajärjestöt, nykyään tärkeimpänä Elinkeinoelämän Keskusliitto.

Lyypekinlaiturin Vanha kauppahalli on valmistunut vuonna 1889. Siitä vähän oikealle on korttelin kulmassa rakennus, jota ennen pidettiin Suomen varjoulkoministeriönä. Silloin taloa hallitsivat metsäteollisuuden vientikartellit. Sittemmin järjestöt siirtyivät syrjemmäs ja UPM-Kymmene piti talossa pääkonttoriaan, kunnes UPM:kin jätti rakennuksen. Nykyään talossa suuren lakifirman Boreniuksen pääkonttori. Talon edessä on Ville Vallgrenin kuuluisa suihkulähdepatsas Manta (oik. Havis Amanda), joka vappuaattoisin saa hetken pienen kantaa ylioppilaslakkiakin. Elokuusta 2014 lokakuuhun Manta sai kantaa päällään ja ympärillään myös hotellihuonetta!

Kauppatoria reunustaa Pohjoisesplanadin varrella rivi arvorakennuksia. Vaaleansininen leveä talo oli alunperin hotelli, mutta nykyään se toimii kaupungintalona. Sisälläkin kannattaa käydä kurkkaamassa 1960-lukulaisen "remontoinnin" jälkiä. Kaupungintalon takana pilkottaa C. L. Engelin suunnitteleman Suurkirkon torni.

Ruskeasävyinen melkein linnamainen talo torin varressa on puolestaan nykyään Ruotsin suurlähetystö. Sen edessä keskellä toria on obeliski, Keisarinnan kivi. Yhdessä ne muistuttavat Suomen historian keskeisestä kertomuksesta eli olemisesta osana joko Ruotsin tai Venäjän valtakuntaa.

Rivistön viimeinen rakennus ennen isompaa risteystä tunnetaan nykyään Presidentinlinnana. Alun perin se oli kauppiastalo, mutta Venäjän keisarien suosima Engel muokkasi siitä keisareillekin kelpaavan majapaikan. Tosin presidentitkään eivät ole siinä enää asuneet sitten Mäntyniemen virka-asunnon valmistumisen reilu parikymmentä vuotta sitten. Presidentinlinnan naapurissa sen vasemmalla puolella on korkeimman oikeuden talo, mutta Engelin piirtämä päävartion pentagon ei kätköpaikalle näy, vaan se jää presidentinlinnan taakse.

Pyörähdys jatkuu linnasta oikealle. Sokeripalaa joidenkin mielestä muistuttava Stora Enson marmorilla päällystetty entinen pääkonttori on Alvar Aallon suunnittelema. Kerrotaan, että Aalto halusi suunnitelmallaan jatkaa Pohjoisesplanadin palazzettojen rivistöä. Joka tapauksessa nykyään hotellina toimiva pääkonttori muodostaa vaikuttavan kontrastin yhdessä sen taakse jäävän Uspenskin ortodoksisen katedraalin kanssa. Uspenski on yksi upeimmista keisarillisen Venäjän vaikutusten merkeistä Helsingissä.

Opastettu pyörähdys päättyy näin katsomaan Katajanokan terminaalin suuntaan. Kesäkuussa 2014 avatussa maailmanpyörässä voi nauttia toisenlaisesta pyörähdyksestä, vaikkapa VIP-vaunussa vaatimattomaan 195 euron hintaan sisältyvän shampanjapullon kera. Sen jälkeen maistuukin alakerran sauna ja reipas pulahdus merivesialtaaseen. Hauskoja hetkiä Helsingissä!
