Zummerzet Cache Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

FamousEccles: Sadly, time to start saying goodbye to this cache along with nearby caches in the FF40 series.

Massive thanks to everyone who took the time to solve the puzzle and visit the cache itself.

The plan is to begin by archiving FF40 #22 to #27 (plus other nearby caches) which have been adversely affected by recent forestry activities. We will archive the remainder of theFF40 series in the coming weeks.

Happy caching. FE.

Geocache Description:

Advance Notice

We are planning to archive the FF40 series in the coming months (plus four nearby caches), starting with the following cluster, which we hope to take in soon after 4th July 2020. The remainder of the FF40 series will be archived in the following 1-2 months. As reported elsewhere, parts of Nipper Grove, through which this string passes, have recently undergone significant levels of forestry, making some of these caches hard to access.

Puzzle

With its spectacular scenery, rich culture and near-impenetrable dialects, people sometime think of Somerset ( ‘Zummerzet’ to the locals) simply as an outstanding tourist destination. It is easy to forget that the county has often been at the very cutting edge of science and technology.

Who remembers now, for example, that Somerset once boasted an active space program with the stated objective of putting a cider barrel into orbit round the Moon during the summer of 1968 (citation through Geocheck).

This project naturally caused some consternation in the United States - as can be seen from an article found in a rare archive copy of the Bridgwater Mercury under the headline “Ar! NASA mark cider keg lob”.

See if you can track down some of the other interesting things that were making the news in Somerset back in the 1960s, using the following list of coordinates as your guide.

A) N51 33.720 W002 39.705

B) N51 28.476 W002 42.150

C) N51 22.044 W002 35.034

D) N51 28.828 W002 41.268

E) N51 17.107 W002 29.160

F) N51 03.495 W002 40.347

G) N51 16.614 W002 34.614

H) N51 11.457 W002 32.880

I) N51 08.845 W002 43.112

J) N51 22.020 W002 36.767

K) N51 27.268 W002 35.300

L) N51 30.212 W002 41.906

The listed coordinates are not for the cache, of course, but for an appropriately named pond not far away. The cache can be found at:
