Geocache Description:

If doing this caching series in winter best to start with Cravedale & work back towards The Whaling Station. The path from Hushinish out to Cravedale is a loosely defined path is prone to being wet, mucky & quite a challenge for the less experienced hill walker. Suitable walking boots & waterproofs required. This series will also take a good 7 hours to complete, maybe more so bear in mind when planning your day.

Once a major part of a crofting callender, the harvesting of peat was not only a back breaking, labour intensive form of fueling your home but also a kind of social event with many families coming together to help each other.  Through the months of May & June you may still see a few Islanders out working their banks before being dried & transported home the traditional 'Peat Stacks', itself a skill or work of art.
