Aegina Series
Aegina is a relatively small island 17 miles SW of Athens. It has a rich history, human presence on the island dates back to the prehistoric period. The town of Aegina was the first capital of modern Greece. Strangely there was no geocache on the island. Aegina series is the first geocaching series consisting of eight caches placed mainly in areas of historical interest.
Kolona
Kolona is an archaeological site in the town of Aegina. It is located near the harbor of Aegina and it was the ancient Acropolis. The hill was first inhabited in 3500 BC and the defensive wall was built around 3000 BC. The settlement was destroyed and rebuilt at least seven times. The remaining of the northern wall that is visible today date around 1600 BC with some ruins from 1300 BC. In the southern part there are remains of Byzantine buildings and priests' residences.
The area was named Kolona (Pillar) after it's only pillar which remains erect until today from the Temple of Apollo. It was built in the 6th century BC and it had a rectangle shape with 11 pillars on the big side and 6 one the small one. In the southern part of the temple was the entrance and 2 small rectangular buildings. In the east was the altar of the temple, southeast was the temple of Artemidos, west was a round building and in the north there are foundations of a rectangular building.
In older excavations, an ancient cemetery was discovered north of Apollo's Temple. Many gold jewels, which are now in the British museum, were found in the tombs.

Leave your car and follow the footpath to the beach. Search for a stonewall. Please hide well the cache. Many people visit this area in the summer
