Geocache Description:

Village Signs No 106: Abthorpe

Abthorpe is centred on a delightful village green with old stone and brick houses sprinkled around it and with the imposing Parish Church of St John the Baptist set up high on one side.

In 1642 during the English Civil War, spinster Jane Leeson built a free school from local stone for the children. This old School (visible in the photo right ->) now serves as the village hall.

The village also has an excellent local pub serving good food and fine ale. It is rather tucked away in a backstreet - but you'll pass close by on the way to the cache.

You'll need a few numbers before you can find the cache - so wander over towards the church and note when Abthorpe first won the Northants Best Kept Village Competition (ABCD). Then shuffle a couple of steps to your left and note when the fading inscription on the plinth was preserved on a bronze plaque by the local villagers (EFGH).

While in Abthorpe why not try another multi: History and a Stroll by silvergeocachers, or my puzzle cache Hamtune?

If anybody would like to expand this series please do. I would just ask that you let SmokeyPugs know first so they can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
