Jusqu’en 1772, l’île était, en ce qui concerne le religieux et l’administratif, rattachée à la commune de Barbâtre. Le 16 janvier de cette même année, Monseigneur Claude-Antoine François-Jacquemet Gautier d’Ancysede, évêque de Luçon, institua par un décret la Crosnière en paroisse Notre-Dame-du-Pé.
Elle obtenait donc son autonomie, possédant son propre cimetière et sa propre église. Mais cette autonomie ne dura que 27 ans. En effet, en 1799, du fait que le chenal de la Lasse devint rapidement envasé, l’île fut rattachée au continent et dans le même temps, rattachée à Beauvoir-sur-Mer. De plus, la Crosnière fut ravagée par les colonnes infernales de Turreau en 1794, durant les guerres de Vendée et l’église et la cure furent brûlées.
De cette époque, il ne reste que le cimetière, où reposent les hommes et les femmes qui colonisèrent l’île de la Crosnière, dont Cornil-Guislain Jacobsen descendant du corsaire dunkerquois d'origine néerlandaise Michel Jacobsen.
Cornil-Guislain s'installa à Noirmoutier en 1740 et entrepris d’agrandir les terres cultivables de la région en suivant les techniques utilisées par ses ancêtres hollandais, il réussit notamment le dessèchement de l’ile de la Crosnière…
