Geocache Description:

A silon nechajte vysiet von z popod uzaveru. Dakujeme a pekne keskovanie :) ENGLISH: Please leave the cache as you found it, so it doesn't stick out. And leave the fishing line hanging out from beneath the lid. Thanks and happy geocaching :)

Gemerské pásmo *jeden kúsok z puzzle* geomorfologicky zahŕňa Volovské vrchy a Slovenský kras *teda ten náš pomyselný jeden kúsok puzzle je zvlnený*. Do tohoto pásma radíme tektonické jednotky gemerika, meliatika, turnaika a silicika *predstavme si, že náš puzzle musí byť tvorený nejakým materiálom.

ENGLISH

As you may have realized, this geocache is located on Gemerska street and it’s called Geo-logloglog. When someone mentions the name Gemer, most people think of the region in the southern Central Slovakia. But, did you know that an important geological unit also goes by that name? Let’s have a quick look at what this unit actually is.

Slovakia is located in a wide mountainous province called the Western Carpathians *general name for numerous mountain chains*. They are composed of a number of tectonic units *units are like puzzle, they fall into a certain place*. They are the front Carpathian depression, flysch zone, Pieniny Klippen belt, belts of core mountains, Vepor belt and Gemer belt.

The Gemer belt *a piece of the puzzle* geomorphologicaly encompasses Volovec Mountains and the Slovak Karst *thus our piece of puzzle is folded and wavy*. This belt is further divided into these tectonic units, Gemericum, Meliaticum, Turnaicum and Silicium *imagine, that our puzzle must be made of a substance. Since each of the belts is composed of 4 units and each has a different sequence of rocks on top of one another, we can visualise them as 4 pieces of toast with a different filling between each one. They make up our puzzle. Of course, each of the fillings can be divided further – proteins, carbohydrates…until we get to molecules and atoms. This analogy works perfectly for our geological units, all of which have their respective sequences, formations and layers, which are composed of rocks, and they in turn are composed of minerals…etc.,*

Hopefully by now, you will have an idea of how complex the geology is in the Western Carpathians. We won’t go further with explanations, since you will most likely stop reading if you haven’t by now. However, if you want to know more, google Western Carpathians and off you go!
