    -  CONTRA-MESTRE - principal ajudante e substituto do Mestre

Lenten pilgrimages of the island of Terceira

At the time of Lent, there is a group of men who joins and part for a pilgrimage around the island of Terceira, praying for yourself and others .... Anyway, praying for the whole world .... In reality these Ranchos the Pilgrims, formed by Homend of Faith, "put" the whole island (and several other islands) to pray. The Ranchos are made by men of all ages, professions and social classes, which are treated as "brothers" and that act between them as brothers indeed.
In the months before the Pilgrimage, these groups of men flock to several times a week to prepare his Pilgrimage.

Turned out , after more than a century of inactivity , the Lenten pilgrimages of the Island. Consists , in the first year (2007 ) , by 23 men , they had several days of preparation to do this around the island to pray and meditate for us all . The pilgrims on Terceira was a tradition that became extinct in the nineteenth century resurgence under the guidance of Father Dolores , a Mariense , rector of the Shrine of the Conception in Angra , from a group of interested people who had participated in festivals in San Miguel .

The orientation of Terceira pilgrimage is the same as that adopted for the Diocese of St. Michael , so the dress ( scarf, shawl and two thirds : one to put around his neck and another to carry in hand ) , catchphrase , ' sovadeira ' or " nosebag " , chants and prayers are equal . The difference lies in the overnight pilgrims brothers who will not be taken in private homes , as the island of the archangel , but in the homes of pilgrims that still exist in homes or people and parish halls .

In Port Jew existed next to the chapel of Our Lady of Hope a house of pilgrims that was bequeathed in his will by Isabel de Gouveia in 1650 . It follows the antiquity of this tradition on this island of Jesus .

After a tour around the island with admission to all the chapels , taken in the direction of clockwise , the pilgrims return to the sanctuary of the Conception . By the year 2014 , there were gold Pilgrimages on Terceira Island .

Preferably in a location away from population or a favorable site (convents etc.) pilgrims brothers are invited to reflect on a theme that was previously released. Usually the theme that the church chooses that year (eg year of the family, the jubilee etc).

However with the experience sharing siblings will share their own experiences and reflected together.
