Hommage aux Dudans (GC511QW)
This cache is a tribute to Dudans brothers, Clément and Fernand, my ancestors. My grandma likes to relate the story of her two uncles who fought during the great war. Clément and Fernand were brothers, one was French, the other one Belgian. We suppose that one of them was born in France, the other one in Belgium, but it remains a supposition. The two brothers fought during World War I, each one for his country. Only Fernand survived.
Clément, the French one, was born on July 9th, 1893. He joined the French army in June 1914 and integrated the 165th Intantry Regiment. After only 3 months, he was declared missing on August 30th, 1914. Recent searches (2014) indicate he might be buried near Verdun.
We don't know very much about Fernand, the Belgian one. He joined Belgium's army at the beginning of the war and got hit by mustard gaz. After the war, he became a police officer. He died from a horse fall.
I care very much about telling this atypical story of two brothers who fought during World War I, each one for his country. After a century, we still are looking for information about them. In the next months, we are going to look for the place where Clement might be buried, near Verdun.

Cette cache rend hommage aux frères Clément et Fernand Dudans, mes aïeux. Ma grand-mère me raconte souvent l'histoire de ses oncles qui ont combattus durant la grande guerre. Clément et Fernand étaient deux frères, l'un français, l'autre belge. On suppose que l'un est né en France et l'autre en Belgique, mais nous ne sommes pas sûrs. Les deux frères ont combattus durant la première guerre mondiale, chacun pour leur pays respectif. Seul Fernand survécut.
Clément, le français, né le 9 juillet 1893 à Flines Les Mortagne, a rejoint l'armée française en juin 1914 et a intégré le 165ème Régiment d'Infanterie. Après seulement 3 mois de rattachement à ce régiment, il fut déclaré disparu le 30 août 1914. Des recherches récentes (2014) nous laisse penser qu'il a été enterré dans un cimetière militaire près de Verdun.
Fernand, le belge, pour qui nous avons assez peu d'informations, a combattu pour la Belgique durant la première partie de la guerre, durant laquelle il reçut du gaz moutarde. Il devint gendarme à la suite de la guerre. Il mourut à la suite d'une chute à cheval.
Je tenais à partager cette histoire avec vous, cette histoire atypique, de deux frères qui ont combattus durant la guerre, chacun pour son pays. Cent ans plus tard, nous sommes encore à la recherche de précisions sur ce qui leur est arrivé. Nous comptons prochainement nous rendre près de Verdun, pour rechercher où a été enterré Clément et pour lui rendre hommage.
