Après la mort de Llywelyn dernier en 1282, tous les prétendants au titre de Prince de Gwynedd et de Pays de Galles auront été, soit éxécutés, mis au couvent, emprisonnés jusqu’à leur mort au château de Bristol ou découragés de prétendre à la succession.
Owain, après la mort de son père en 1363, fera tout, dès 1365, pour réclamer son patrimoine au pays de Galles et en Angleterre, biens qui lui avait été confisqués dès lors qu’il était en service hors du pays. Il se retrouvait dès lors le seul héritier vivant, prétendant au titre de Prince de Galles. Mais de par sa filiation lointaine, la réclamation du trône n’était pas sans mérite.
Owain Lawgoch se met au service du roi de France en 1369 en tant que chef d’une armée libre lors de la période de trêve entre la France et l’Angleterre.
Owain fait sa première tentative pour réclamer son héritage à la fin de 1369. Une flotte a été préparé à Harfleur aux frais du roi Charles V pour envahir le Pays de Galles sous son commandement. Une tempête les forcera à rentrer au port au bout de quelques jours. Owain servira avec Bertrand du Guesclin dans le Maine et l'Anjou en 1370 et en 1371 puis, à la tête de sa compagnie, au service de la ville de Metz.
En mai 1372, à Paris, Owain annonce qu'il a l'intention de réclamer à nouveau le trône du Pays de Galles. Il part de Harfleur avec de l'argent emprunté à Charles V. Owain attaque tout d’abord l'île de Guernesey, quand un message arrive de Charles V lui ordonnant d'abandonner l'expédition pour aller en Castille y chercher des navires afin d’attaquer La Rochelle. Il vaincra une force anglaise et Gasconne à Soubise plus tard cette année-là avec la capture Sir Thomas Percy et Jean de Grailly, Captal de Buch. Bientôt les villes de Saint-Jean-d’Angély, Angoulême et Saintes se rendront aussi. Le 8 septembre La Rochelle, coincée entre Owain et sa flotte maritime, et du Guesclin par terre, se rendra.
Une autre invasion du pays de Galles a été prévue en 1373 mais a dû être abandonnée par Owain quand Jean de Gand lancera son offensive à partir du nord de la France. Il a passé la plus grande partie de 1373 en Poitou et Saintonge. La victoire française de Chizé réglera la reconquête du Poitou.
En 1374, il a combattu à Mirebeau et en Saintonge. En 1375 Owain a été enrôlé par Enguerrand de Coucy pour l’aider à conquérir les terres des Habsbourg qu’il revendiquait au titre de neveu du défunt duc d'Autriche dont sa mère était la sœur.
En 1377, il y avait des rapports pour qu’Owain envisage une autre expédition, cette fois avec l'aide de la Castille. Le gouvernement anglais, alarmé, envoie un espion, Jon Lamb, avec pour projet d'assassiner Owain, qui avait été chargé d'assiéger Mortagne-sur-Gironde en Poitou. Lamb gagne la confiance d’Owain et devint son chambellan, ce qui lui donne l'occasion de le poignarder à mort en Juillet 1378. Yvain a été enterré dans l’église de Saint-Léger et tous les gentilshommes de sa compagnie ont assisté aux funérailles. Ieuan Wyn a pris le commandement de sa compagnie. Le siège a continué et Mortagne a été délivré par John de Neville, le nouveau lieutenant d’Aquitaine le 18 septembre 1378.

The French victory Chize solve the reconquest of Poitou . In 1374 , he fought in Mirebeau and Saintonge. In 1375 Owain was drafted by Enguerrand de Coucy to help conquer the lands of the Habsburgs he claimed under nephew of the late Duke of Austria, whose mother was the sister . In 1377 , there were reports Owain planning another expedition , this time with the help of Castile. The British government , alarmed , sent a spy, Jon Lamb, with plans to assassinate Owain , who had been instructed to besiege Mortagne -sur -Gironde in Poitou . Lamb wins the trust and Owain became his chamberlain , which gives him the opportunity to stab to death in July 1378. Owain was buried in the church of Saint -Léger and all the gentlemen of his company attended the funeral . Ieuan Wyn took command of his company. The siege continued and Mortagne was issued by John Neville , the new lieutenant Aquitaine September 18, 1378.

Les festivités relatives à la cérémonie de dévoilement du monument commémorant Owain Lawgoch, le Chevalier à la Main Rouge, ont eu lieu du 15 au 17 août 2003. Le monument a une hauteur de huit pieds, sculpté par un tailleur de pierre français. Dans la paume de la main se tient un disque d'ardoise fabriqué et gravé dans le Nord du Pays de Galles. Le disque est marqué avec les deux lions de Gwynedd et les bras d’Owain Lawgoch. Le monument est installé sur le site de l'ancien château.

The festivities for the unveiling ceremony of the monument commemorating Owain Lawgoch, the Knight of the Red Hand, took place from 15 to 17 August 2003. The monument has a height of eight feet, carved by a French stone carver. In the palm of the hand holding a slate disc manufactured and engraved in North Wales. The disc is marked with the two lions of Gwynedd and the arms of Owain Lawgoch. The monument is located on the site of the old castle.

Mortagne, belvédère sur l’estuaire de la Gironde
Profitez de l’endroit pour vous rendre sur le belvédère tout proche. De ce promontoire nous avons une vue quasi aérienne sur le port et le chenal qui le relie à l’estuaire de la Gironde, avec une vue magnifique sur les marais environnants, l'estuaire et sur la rive d'en face, le Médoc. Les marais commencent au pied des falaises mortes et s’étendent jusqu’à la Gironde.

Mortagne, belvedere on the estuary of the Gironde
Enjoy the place to go to the nearby gazebo. This promontory we almost aerial view of the port and the channel that connects to the estuary of the Gironde, with magnificent views of the surrounding marsh, estuary and on the opposite bank, the Médoc. Marshes begin at the foot of cliffs and died extend to the Gironde.
