Het kanon 75 mm model (????) is een veldartilleriestuk van het Franse leger en één van de beroemdste kanonnen uit de geschiedenis. Een revolutionair concept voor zijn periode, die alle laatste verbeteringen die de artillerie op het einde van de 19de eeuw kende, bevat, zoals daar zijn: het gebruik van rookloos poeder, munitie in hulzen, obussen met een tijdsbuis, laden via het sluitstuk volgens het Nordenfelt principe en een hydropneumatische terugslagrem. Deze samenvoegingen, mits het uitsluiten van de missers tijdens het vuren, maakten de oude droom van elke kanonnier waar, het snelvuur. Dankzij deze karakteristieken werd dit kanon het “canon roi” genoemd.
Als teken van de Franse militaire macht, staat hij gekend als “le soixante quinze”, zoals in “notre glorieux soixante quinze”, en is hij een cult object voor de militairen en Franse patriotten, die in hem een oplossing zien voor alle problemen. Dit enthousiasme zal leiden tot het verwaarlozen van de modernisering van de zware artillerie, een fout die zeer duur betaald zal worden tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Zelfs al was de 75 het beste veldartilleriestuk uit zijn tijd, hij was minder bepalend en bruikbaar in een stellingenoorlog waar er veeleer zware artillerie nodig was om de ingegraven troepen te bereiken. Toch zal hij zich onderscheiden, in grote mate door zijn bedieners die een zware tol zullen betalen. Nog in dienst in grote aantallen binnen het Franse leger van 1940 bleek hij volledig voorbijgestreefd voor een bewegingsoorlog, want er werd nagelaten hem aan te passen op een bewegend onderstel, wat onontbeerlijk was. Toch zal hij een tweede jeugd kennen als anti-tankstuk, tijdens de Slag van Frankrijk zowel in de handen van de Wehrmacht als in de handen van de Vrije Franse Strijdkrachten.
