St. John the Evangelist church here in Read was built in 1884 and the spire was added in 1911. A planned lych gate was never built.
Prior to that date worshippers had to trek down to Whalley.
A parshioner's gift of a gilded bronze eagle was mounted atop the spire some years ago, but it blew off and for safety reasons now hovers inside the rear of the church.
